What’s going on?
As of June 3rd, on-prem ConnectWise Automate instances installed on Windows Server 2012 R2 will lose the ability to communicate with cloud-hosted PSA servers.
We did some digging to determine what functionality is lost until Server 2012 Automate instances have their server OS updated to a modern version.
- Companies can no longer be imported from PSA to Automate.
- Contacts will stop synching between the two platforms.
- Alert ticketing generated by Automate’s monitors will continue to generate within automate, but will stop generating in PSA. This is a major issue.
- Alert ticketing will no longer auto-close in PSA. This also leads to a potentially larger issue of the ticket staying open within automate and preventing internal monitors from triggering due to the open ticket. Another major issue.
- Assets and agreement mapping will stop synching to PSA causing potential inaccurate device counts for billing.
What does this mean for you?
This bulletin is specific to on-prem Automate instances installed on windows server 2012 R2.
- If your Automate instance is on a Server OS version higher than 2012 R2, then great, no actions need to be taken on your end.
- If you are on Windows Server 2012 R2, ConnectWise recommends migrating to a new Automate server. Server 2012 is well, 12 years old at this point. That’s 12-year-old technology being used to host a critical business application that provides access to client systems. It’s about time to upgrade anyway, isn’t it?
Why ConnectWise? Why?
Server migrations can be painful but there is a very good reason that ConnectWise is making the change.
- Server 2012 R2 does not support Microsoft .net Framework 4.6 (or newer) which in turn is required for enabling TLS 1.2 Encryption. This is a security measure to ensure that data transmitted between the on-prem Automate server and the cloud-hosted PSA server is encrypted to modern standards.
- While this change is surely an inconvenience to those impacted, it signifies a critical advancement in fortifying the security of both your Automate environment and ConnnectWise’s hosted servers. With the increasing threats in today’s cybersecurity landscape we’re happy to see ConnectWise proactively leading the way in security enhancements.
